Historic Art Exhibition Featuring Renowned Hudson Valley Artist and Illustrator,
John Fleming Gould at Bannerman Island Gallery, Beacon, NY
April 13 – June 2, 2024 – Public Opening Reception Saturday, April 13th!
Saturday, April 13th – Sunday, June 2, 2024 – The Bannerman Island Gallery located at 150 Main Street in Beacon, NY, is honored to present an exhibition of historic works by renowned artist and illustrator, John Fleming Gould (1906 – 1996) – a former Cornwall, NY resident. A public opening reception for this prestigious exhibition will be held on Saturday, April 13th, from 4:00 – 6:00pm.
This exhibition, presented by John F. Gould’s son Robert Gould and his wife Loretta, will include some early pulp illustrations, General Electric School and College posters, original Hudson Valley paintings, pen and ink illustrations and many more historic scenes of New York. Prints and some original works will be for sale.
John F. Gould had a long career, both as an artist and art instructor. John was born in Worcester, MA, studied art and graduated from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, and later instructed at Pratt for 22 years. He was a prominent illustrator for the Saturday Evening Post for over 8 years and for many other national corporations.
In the world of fine arts, John F. Gould was a successful painter. His oil, acrylics, watercolors, and pen and ink originals are in many private collections. For subject matter, he was partial to historical subjects, especially in the Hudson River Valley – from the Statue of Liberty to Albany, NY. For over 20 years, Mr. Gould was an art consultant/illustrator for General Electric Company in Schenectady, NY and the Erie, PA Locomotive Division. His paintings of railroad subjects are known world-wide. In 1957, John and wife Mary Gould established the Bethlehem Art Gallery in Cornwall NY – where he also provided art instruction.
John F. Gould’s popular illustration of Bannerman’s Castle actually has a very important role in the making of the Bannerman Castle Trust, Inc. (BCT), a 501 (c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of Bannerman’s Island, its castle and structures. In the early 1990’s, actor/director and now Executive Director and Founder of the BCT, Neil Caplan, saw Mr. Gould’s illustration in a publication and became fascinated by the historic island. Realizing that the island would be a perfect place to re-purpose as a place for public tours, concerts and theatrical events – Neil bravely approached The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and historic preservation and has been working collaboratively with them ever since!
The exhibition will run through Sunday, June 2nd. Gallery hours are Saturdays & Sundays, 12:00 noon – 5:00pm and weekday afternoons by chance and appointment. The Bannerman Island Gallery located at 150 Main Street in Beacon, is pleased to present a beautiful exhibition of Hudson River Valley Paintings and photographs by painter, Virginia Donovan and photographer Mary Ann Glass. Many works feature the Hudson Highlands region and Bannerman’s Island. A public opening reception for the show will be held on Saturday, December 10th from 4:00 – 6:00 pm at the gallery. The show will continue through Sunday, February 5th, 2023. Gallery hours are Sat. & Sun. from 12:00noon – 5:00 pm and weekday afternoons and evenings by chance and appointment by calling 845-416-8342.
Painter Virginia Donovan began painting in New York’s Hudson Valley where she continues to work in watercolor, pastel, acrylic, and oils. In the early 1990s, while still working a full-time career, she enrolled in drawing and watercolor classes and her new passion for art grew from there. Born and raised in the Hudson Valley, one of Virginia’s passions is supporting the Bannerman Castle Trust, a non-profit in Beacon, NY, dedicated to the preservation of historic Bannerman’s Island and Castle on the Hudson River. As a young girl, her mother lived on the historic island and it has always held a special fascination for Virginia. As a working artist, she has participated in numerous art shows, benefits, and Plein Air events on Bannerman’s Island.
In 2003 Virginia co-founded RiverWinds Gallery in Beacon, NY, with four other artist friends. RiverWinds was a multi-faceted art space offering traditional and contemporary paintings, photography, jewelry, ceramics, and fiber arts. The gallery closed in 2020 due to the impact of the pandemic, and since then Virginia has concentrated on painting full-time. Virginia’s talents as a working artist have taken her beyond the Hudson Valley. In 2007, she was one of only two Ameri- cans invited to participate in the Jean-Paul LaPointe International Symposium in Chicoutimi, Quebec, along with 41 other artists. From 2001 – 2019 she participated in many workshops, residencies, and events in the USA, New Zealand, and Europe. Currently, Virginia serves on two gallery jury committees.
Photographer Mary Ann Glass’s work has been described as spiritual, sensual, serious, and elegant. She enjoys experimenting with a range of mediums from acrylic to watercolor, digital to infrared photography, manipulated Polaroids, solarized etching plates, encaustics, cyanotypes, and other mixed media. Her new focus is on iPhoneography, and she has been teaching phone apps to students for several years. Mary Ann was also a co-owner of RiverWinds Gallery in Beacon, NY.
Originally from Ohio, Mary Ann attended Ohio State University and the American Graduate School of International Management. After a corporate career in Manhattan, she took a leave of absence and attended a summer intensive program at the Rocky Mountain School of Photography in Mon- tana. In 1999, she left her corporate job and settled in the Hudson Valley as a professional photographer.
Mary Ann has studied with photographers Eric Lindbloom, Dan McCormack, Joel Meyerowitz, Joyce Tenneson, and Arlene Collins. Her works have been exhibited in several juried groups shows selected by curators from major museums including; the Guggenheim Museum of Art; the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Dia: Beacon. She has participated in International Artist Residencies in Myslenice, Poland, and in Beacon, NY, and has exhibited in many galleries in NYC and throughout New York State. She recently won a Red Ribbon at the Front Gallery in Patterson, NY. She has also taught photography at Barrett Art Center in Poughkeepsie, NY, and at other galleries, and has led workshops in Italy and photo tours of the Hudson Valley. She has now judged and curated more than 130 exhibitions!
A remarkable exhibition featuring smaller fine artworks, all works in this show will be available for purchase. Artwork sales benefit restoration projects on Bannerman’s Island.

The Bannerman Island Gallery located at 150 Main Street will presents their Annual Small Works Winter Exhibition, on view through Sunday, February 4th 2024.
Small paintings, watercolors, prints, photographs, and hanging mixed media works will decorate the walls and other objects of art like ceramics, sculpture and other artistic gift items will be on view in the gallery. Many of the works will be Hudson River Valley themed.
Visitors to the gallery can expect to see regional landscape, florals, still-life works and other imaginative works, both traditional and modern, as well as functional and whimsical gift items.
All works are for sale and all proceeds from sales will benefit on-going restoration work historic Bannerman’s Island. Gallery hours are Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00noon – 5:00pm and most weekday afternoons and early evenings by chance or appointment by calling 845-416-8342.

The Bannerman Island Gallery located at 150 Main Street in Beacon, NY is pleased to present a new exhibition “The Magic of Castles” featuring spectacular photographs by Linda T Hubbard, from Saturday, September 9th – Sunday, November 5th. A public artist reception will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2023 from 4:00-6:00pm. Come take a walk via photographs of castles, some ruins, some beautifully restored – but all holding secrets of a long-ago life.
Throughout her travels and through her lens, professional photographer Linda Hubbard has searched out castles: from the British Isles of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales; to the European Countries of France, Portugal, Greece and Italy; to the shores of the Hudson River. Each castle has its own history, some built high on a cliff or an island, some with only a few walls remaining – and some beautifully restored with wandering gardens. The artist states “Whether looking up at a castle tower and walking down worn stone steps, I always wonder who built them and how, who has lived here and what is their story? There is a certain magic about the old stone walls that continue to whisper to me.”
Hubbard’s love of photography started at an early age with a brownie camera, but it was not until after retirement from IBM that she had the time to devote to her camera and love of photography. Her second love is helping other artists. She is a former President of Beacon Arts, Chair of Art Along the Hudson and co-owner of RiverWinds Gallery in Beacon, NY. Currently she is the Sherman Library Art Curator in Sherman, CT and President of the Sherman Artists Association, www.shermanartists.org.
