Help Stabilize Bannerman Castle

The Bannerman Island Arsenal Stabilization Project

After successfully stabilizing the main residence on Bannerman Island, Bannerman Caste Trust began the current initiative to work on the arsenal structure and breakwater towers, the most identifiable features of the Bannerman Castle complex. Stresses from the heat of the 1969 fire, coupled with four decades of constant battering from harsh weather, have taken a serious toll on these elements. Bannerman Castle suffered a major collapse of two and a half walls of its iconic Tower in 2010. The unprecedented damage was caused by aging mortar and unprotected brick, issues that can be remedied with proper intervention. The remaining elements of the arsenal are constructed of the same materials; if left without bracing, further degradation will likely occur, so mediation is essential.

Stabilization will allow Bannerman Castle Trust the opportunity to greatly augment the impact that Bannerman Castle’s heritage tourism has on the Hudson Valley region's economic growth. The project will also benefit the thousands of sightseers, preservationists, hikers, and enthusiasts who come annually to experience Bannerman Island's unique cultural, historical, and recreational benefits.

Through supportive cabling, internal cribbing, and masonry repair, BCT will be able to secure the remaining walls, repair two turret structures on the south façade that have extensive crack systems, brace the west wall to prevent bowing, secure loose and damaged masonry elements, reinforce the bridge at the main historic entry, and properly support the breakwater foundations in the Hudson River.

All donations made to the Bannerman Castle Trust are tax-deductible.
